"Whether you like it or not, alone is something you'll be quite a lot."
If your professional feed looks anything like mine, it's gotten crowded. AI-generated explainer infographics. Generic comments from AI bots. The usual parade of professional milestones and new opportunities. Somewhere in that noise, real ideas — the ones that actually change how work gets done — are getting harder to hear.
This post is for the people who still have them anyway.

The Waiting Place
Every professional starts in the same spot: the waiting place. It's not a bad place. It's comfortable. You go along with the group, accept how things currently work, and don't spend much energy questioning the process. Most days, that's fine.
Then something breaks the spell. You spot an emerging industry standard that should already be in use, but isn't. You notice a small blemish — a spelling error, a broken layout, an outdated step — that everyone else has quietly decided to treat as just how things are.
The moment you see it, you're not in the waiting place anymore. And here's the part nobody warns you about: the moment you break free is also the moment you're completely alone.
How long does it take for a good idea to be forgotten?
Take a second and answer honestly before reading on.
Cognitive science puts the number at 15 to 30 seconds before an insight starts to fade — and just a few minutes before it's gone for good. That's the working memory bottleneck: your brain can only hold a few pieces of new information at once, and without something to anchor it, that buffer clears itself out fast.

And none of it matters yet, because you don't have the resources — or someone else's time — to act on it. It's just sitting there, staring back at you from a scrap of paper. This is the "when reality sets in" phase: the clarity, time, or people needed to implement the idea simply aren't there yet.
If only that envelope also had a QR code — a way to share a "paperless" version of the idea for a fraction of the cost of printing copies or handing off a disk drive.
But then what?
The idea still has to fit into something bigger than itself. Your epiphany is 30 seconds old. The thing you're trying to improve might be 30 years old, with a lot of moving parts and a lot of people who've made their peace with how it currently works.
Before industry-endorsed, machine-readable information standards existed, fitting a small idea into a big system meant a lengthy cost-benefit analysis and a human-intensive governance process — one effectively built to gatekeep even the tiniest improvement. A misspelled word. A visual blemish. An emerging standard nobody's gotten around to adopting. Individually small. Collectively, the reason good ideas die of neglect instead of rejection.
This is the moment most people quietly give up. Not because the idea was bad. Because being the only one who sees it is exhausting.

If an update costs less than a penny of electricity, why wait for a committee to approve a change?

Especially if you are talking about a million tiny enhancements that you can implement for less than a penny of electricity
